Synopsis of the play:

Dick Whittington sets off from Gloucestershire to London to seek his fortune. In far off Egypt, Evil King Rat and his ratty minions have taken over the country spreading disease and pestilence (perhaps in revenge for the singing and dancing in the opening number) His plan is to invade Morocco and from there get to Europe and finally invade and take over England.

Fairy Bow Belles is determined to put a stop to his plans and persuades Tom, the cat to help Dick Whittington and between them they will stop King Rat. King rat is not impressed and vows to defeat them.

The scene moves to London Town where Alderman Fitzwarren is bemoaning to his assistant Beau Nidel the the loss of one of his ships at sea. The Alderman runs a shop in town and we meet the rest of of his household, Sarah the cook and Alice Fitzwarren the Alderman's daughter.
Dick arrives and is told of King Rat's plan by Fairy Bowbelles who introduces him to Tom then job done, she leaves. Alice meets the newcomers and as she rather likes him offers to ask her father about a job for Dick.

After a cookery lesson by Sarah and Beau, we find Dick and Tom have been exploring the city and Dick has a lie down for a sleep. The Fairy appears and warns Tom that King Rat is near and Tom should take care. She goes and Tom pretends to sleep. King Rat turns up and tries to poison Dick but Tom saves the day by fighting off the rat.
They go to the Alderman's shop where after an initial reluctance Fitzwarren agrees to employ Dick and they go off to talk term leaving Beau who is greeted by King Rat who hypnotises Beau and gives him a ring to keep him under his power! He orders Beau to do something that will get Dick sacked. Beau tries but fails miserably, however King Rat has another despicable plan. All return to the shop after a busy and profitable day and the takings are put in the safe. Dick and Tom are left to sleep in the room and look after the takings. While they are asleep, King Rat enters and opens the safe and then puts the money in Dick's knapsack and leaves raising the alarm. When the others enter they find the safe open and find the money in Dick's knapsack they think he stole it! Although Alice has her doubts about his guilt, Alderman Fitzwarren turns Dick out of the house.

Dick and the cat are climbing Highgate Hill when they hear the bells of London calling him to "Turn again Whittington". So he makes up his mind to return and clear his name!

Interval and a cup of tea!

Act Two opens with King Rat talking to a hypnotised Beau. The rat needs to get his rats to England so he has faked a letter from the Sultana of Morocco to Alderman Fitzwarren but instead of goods from Morocco his ship will be carrying rats back to England. What a devilish scheme. He also instructs Beau to reveal that it was King Rat who stole the money and perhaps Dick will travel to Morocco and there meet a grisly fate. Once he has cackled his way off stage the others return and the Alderman reads the letter and takes Dick on the voyage with him and they all set off to the ship. He leaves wih Dick and the cat while Sarah and Beau meet King Rat who tries to win Sarah to his cause but fails.

On Board the SS Mrs Glub Glub(the Alderman's Ship) The crew are joined by sailors Futtock and Cracker and they do excercises to prepare them for the voyage. They set sail but a storm blows up and the ship goes down with all hands. Not all is lost as fairy Bow Belles pleads with Poseidon, King of the Deeps to save them and after a lovely UV underwater scene the crew are washed up on the shores of Morocco. They finally all meet up and after a bit of a sing song to keep the rats way, Sarah meets the Vizier of Morocco who offers to take them to see the Sultana.
The Sultana is not a happy Sultana as her country is overrun by rats and they have eaten all the food. When the voyagers are brought before her she denies sending for the ship and Fitzwarren, however when she sees Tom, she orders them to give her the cat which they refuse. However after the mild threat of execution they agree to lend Tom to the Sultana to rid her of the rats and Fitzwarren will supply her with food and provisions at a very good rate.
King Rat fearing his plans are going wrong attacks Dick who kills him. Alice asks Dick to marry her and the Fairy arrives to magick everyone back to London with only the walkdown and finale song to finish everything off!
